a single red balloon

red balloon

the bird pin-wheeling outside my window
is a brown furry heart;
beating, fluttering, calling, flying,

loving the world.

it’s my heart
digging up and out;
taking flight from my body,

frolicking free.

in the open green, on a wide wet wing,
like a mayfly with just one day;
escaping the jar to play out its

one act.

a single red balloon
taking its one round breath
and disappearing up into

the ether.

Art: Red Balloon, by Paul Klee, 1922
